Dorothy A. (Bettez) Roy, RN of Bedford, NH died on February 12th after a year long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 79.
Born in Claremont, NH on November 1, 1932, Dot grew up in several New England locations including the family farm in Newport, VT, Kennebunkport, ME, and Attleboro, MA. Moving to Manchester in 1948, she attended and graduated from St. George's High School and then was accepted into the program of nursing at Notre Dame School of Nursing in 1950. During her training she met and fell in love with Lionel Roy whom she married at Sacred Heart Church in 1953. They settled on the west side of Manchester raising their five children. Dot worked for many years as a nurse at the New Hampshire State Hospital, Notre Dame Hospital , Catholic Medical Center, Manchester Visiting Nurses, and New Hampshire College.
Dorothy's life was filled with family and friends. She especially loved to travel and some of her fondest memories were the many cruises she and Lionel went on over the years. But her most precious times were spent with family, especially the holidays, birthdays, graduations and all the school and sporting events of her grandchildren. She loved the Red Sox and the Patriots and often talked of certain players like they were her own family. She loved life and those who knew her were instantly caught up in her warm personality, sense of humor, and openness to all. She will be greatly missed.
Preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Jeanne Bettez, she is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Lionel, beloved sister, Pauline Dionne and her husband, Normand, children, Dr. Michael Roy and wife, Dawn of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Patricia Roy Wolf of Manchester, Kathleen Roy and partner Martha Friendshuh of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Donna Chartrand and husband Alan of Pelham, NH and Dr. Christopher Roy and wife Dr. Charlene Chiang-Roy of Boston. Memere is also survived by twelve grandchildren Christopher, Bethany, Matthew, Sarah, Angela, Bryan, Kevin, Nathan, Isaac, Jonah, Henry, and Eliza and two great grandchildren, Noah and Hadley, soon to be born. Many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many grandcats and granddogs.
A wake will be held at Phaneuf Funeral Home, 250 Coolidge Avenue from2-4 and 6-8PM on Wednesday with Dorothy's eulogy and special prayer service given by her children at 6:00 PM. Valet parking will be available during the evening calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Sacred Heart Church, 247 South Main Street, Manchester on Thursday at 11:00AM. Committal prayers will follow in the chapel at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Manchester.
The family is deeply grateful for the support and care from all the nurses and nurse aides who helped with Dot's care especially her nurse Maureen. Memorials preferred to the Hospice Program of Manchester Visiting Nurse Association, 1070 Holt Avenue, Suite 1400, Manchester, NH. 03103.
